Safety First: Quality Control at Work.

By Chesley Turner on August 19, 2016 1:47 PM

As I write this blog, there are just under 14,000 aircraft in flight in the world, at least according to Flightradar24.com, which is both fascinating and terrifying to look at. (Try it. You’ll see.)

Members Only: Airline Rewards Programs and Policy Compliance

By Chesley Turner on June 10, 2016 10:29 AM

With Monday’s announcement regarding its switch to a revenue-based frequent flier program, American Airlines has joined Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. (Those three do sure do a lot together!) The great American airline triumvirate has spoken: we are valued for our wallets. But they’re not alone - all the other major players – Virgin, JetBlue, and even the everyman’s best friend, Southwest, have already made the plunge.

Convention Season Is Coming.

You know that sinking sensation you get when you arrive at your hotel and there are a lot of people around? Like, a lot a lot? And then, as you’re waiting in an ungodly long check-in line, you hear the group of people in front of you (who all seem to know each other, and will all miraculously have rooms ready, even though you’ll be told to come back at 3PM to get your room key) drop the name of an organization or event that sounds HUGE.

The trades are picking up on last week's airline misdirection trick. CBS MoneyWatch covered the basics of the issue, but forgot to lay out your best options. You're a busy travel manager - you can't ask all your travelers (or rely on all your travelers) to painstakingly purchase the correct series of one-ways, and then manage them if their plans change.  Which brings me to my point:

Over the past week, World Travel, Inc. agents have been noticing strange and distinct pricing discrepancies when pricing multi-flight trips: pricing them as multiple one-ways on a split ticket garners a price that is significantly lower than pricing the trip as a multi-segment.

Passport Crunch Looms for 2016-2018

By Chesley Turner on December 30, 2015 4:03 PM

Got a passport?

Take it out and check the expiration date. The Department of State is warning of a passport crunch coming very soon, that may extend the time it takes you to apply for or renew a passport. Here's why:
1) A number of travel regulations changed in 2006-2008, which increased the number of U.S. citizens with passports. The 10-year-expiration date is coming up on all those passports, so there is an expected higher demand for renewals.
2) The dollar is strong right now, so more people are looking to travel abroad.
3) The Real ID act has heightened awareness of forms of ID and may contribute slightly to higher passport demand.

Gordon Wilson: Redefining the GDS through an Innovative, Holistic Approach

By Chesley Turner on September 23, 2015 1:57 PM

Since 2011, Gordon Wilson has been at the helm of Travelport, ushering it into an era of increased content, enhanced usability, IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, and even a redefined identity (Travelport is a Travel Commerce Platform; “GDS” is passé, haven’t you heard?). It comes as no surprise, then, that he possesses a remarkably holistic view of the travel industry and the integral role of the global distribution system. Travelport is more than a storefront for aggregated content; it’s an innovator of improved technology, an intermediary in industry partnerships, and a proponent of travel and tourism benefits.

Hello Economy. Welcome Back.

By Chesley Turner on September 16, 2015 8:25 AM

The economy seems to be breathing a little easier, at least for the moment. That means business travel is back in a big way. If you want proof, look at the hotel occupancy rate (HOR) and average daily rate (ADR). According to STR Global, ADR is steadily rising in all four global regions. In the Americas, the July ADR almost hit $125, which was up 5.8% YOY. This is mirrored by Europe’s 8% increase to $133.24, EMEA’s 5.3% increase to $159.10, and APAC’s subtler 1.1% increase to $105.12. PricewaterhouseCooper’s 2015 Hospitality Directions Report, as summarized by Business Travel News, estimates that the year’s ADR will level out at about $120.79, which is up 5% from last year.
