1. Northwest and KLM Launch Auto Close

Launch Auto Close - In October 2002 Northwest and KLM implemented a policy regarding non-refundable tickets. This policy stated that most non-refundable tickets issued after September 5, 2002 for flights scheduled on or after October 1, 2002 would have no value after scheduled departure unless the ticket reissue is complete prior to departure. To support this policy, Northwest and KLM have developed an automated process called "Auto Close." Beginning June 17, 2003, all electronic coupons with flights that have a "no show" status will be automatically closed. If a passenger "no shows" a flight by not notifying Northwest or KLM prior to departure, the passenger's unused coupons will have no value.

Northwest/KLM New Check-in Policy - On June 17, 2003 Northwest and KLM changed check-in time for domestic and international flights. The changes are being made to reflect current airport processing times as they are affected by federal government security measures, as well as to better coordinate service with partner airlines. Customers traveling on domestic flights within the US (including Alaska and Hawaii) will now be required to check-in 30 minutes before their flight and be onboard the aircraft 15 minutes prior to departure. Passengers traveling from Denver, Las Vegas and Atlanta will be required to check-in 45 minutes prior to departure. Customers traveling on international flights will now be required to check in 60 minutes before their flight and be onboard the aircraft 30 minutes prior to departure. The international check-in policy applies to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean as well as to trans-atlantic, trans-pacific, and interport flights.

2. Paper Ticket Fee Increases

Continental Airlines and US Airways have recently increased their paper ticket fees from USD $25 / CAD $40 to USD $50 / CAD $80.00. This fee applies to all paper tickets where e-ticket eligibility is available and applies to all ticket distributions including tickets issued by travel agents within the United States.

3. US Airways News

Effective September 7, 2003 US Airways will discontinue service to and from Orange County, CA. Passengers will be offered Los Angeles (41 miles) or San Diego (91 miles) as alternate cites. US Airways Express expanded regional jet service to Bangor, Maine by adding more summer flights from Philadelphia and new service from Pittsburgh, New York-LaGuardia and Reagan Washington National. All service to Bangor will be in a 50-seat Embraer-145 Regional Jet.

4. Continental Airlines News

Continental Airlines will be resuming their nonstop service between its New York hub, Newark Liberty International Airport and Hong Kong. Flights will resume August 1 with four weekly flights in each direction. The service has been reintroduced with fares as low as $499 roundtrip from Newark and $635 roundtrip from other cities including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland and Washington, D.C. These fares do not include security fees, PFCs, or international taxes.

5. Air Rage Spreads to Online Travel Bookings

Consumers are keen to book travel online, but are frustrated by high error rates, unclear pricing and confusing fare rules. A study conducted by Web Mystery Shoppers International, Inc. in April and May of 2003 found that nearly 40% of the mystery shoppers got error messages when trying to place their orders, 25% did not know what the final price would be, and 41% were unsure if they could cancel their flight bookings. Key frustrations expressed by the shoppers included: Confusing airport codes, particularly in cities where there is more than one airport. Agonizingly slow search times, with many useless results. Sites that hid or did not provide toll-free telephone numbers. When shoppers are ready to book, they want to get all their questions answered right away, not wait a day or two for a reply to an e-mail. High prices: few of the shoppers felt that the prices were better than elsewhere.
