2. World Health Organization (WHO) Releases Travel Warning
- The WHO announced Wednesday that people should postpone
unnecessary travel to Toronto, Beijing and China’s Shanxi province
because of the danger of SARS. It was the global health agency’s
latest move to stem the worldwide spread of severe acute
respiratory syndrome. The organization previously warned against
such travel to Hong Kong and the Chinese province of Guangdong.
The travel warning will be active for at least three weeks, double
the maximum incubation period for SARS. China, which has come
under fierce criticism for failing to reveal the extent of the
SARS problem, now says that the number of confirmed cases in the
country has passed 2,400. The virus has caused more than 250
deaths worldwide. They include 110 in Mainland China, 109 in Hong
Kong and 16 in Canada .
3. Toronto Attacks World Health Organization Travel Ban
- Toronto has reacted angrily to the travel ban advised by WHO.
Both the Mayor and the health chief of the Canadian city have
urged the WHO to re-think its decision on non-essential travel.
Mayor Mel Lastman stated “In Toronto, SARS is primarily a disease
of health care workers and has occurred largely in hospital
settings. The disease has not spread in community settings and
that is very good news for the city and for those travelers,
visitors and business people who are considering whether or not
they should come to Toronto.”
4. United Testing Onboard Food Sale - United conducted
a test selling food onboard its Denver-Seattle market this week
featuring menus designed by Eli’s Cheesecake Company. United
economy customers on flights that normally do not include meals
will be able to purchase meals on board the aircraft. Rather than
purchasing food on the run in the airport, customers will have the
opportunity to purchase restaurant-quality meals from the comfort
of their seats. Customers can select from two meal choices per
flight. Breakfast will be offered for 7 dollars, lunch and dinner
for 10 dollars.
5. Federal Aviation Administration Predicts Modest Air Travel
for 2003 - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
predicts that the demand for air travel will be modest for 2003,
but will continually gain strength and reach pre-9/11 levels by
2006. The prediction has air travel returning to full capacity at
a slower rate than previously anticipated. The forecast also said
international markets would grow faster than domestic markets over
the next 12 years.
6. Luhthansa’s Eurofare - Exploring Europe at $89 a Flight
- Passengers purchasing a round-trip transatlantic ticket in the
U.S. on Lufthansa or United Airlines by May 15, 2003 can add
Eurofare coupons at $89 per flight segment for travel to any
Lufthansa destination in Europe valid for travel through June 14.
